How to change primary account in new Outlook

If you have several mailboxes in the Outlook app, then you can make any account primary unless this setting is restricted by your administrator.

To change the primary account in the new Outlook for Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Settings (gear) icon in the top right corner of the Outlook window.
  2. In the Settings menu, go to Accounts > Email accounts.
  3. Find the mailbox you wish to set as the new primary account and click Manage to the right of it. Manage an account in the new Outlook.

  1. Thank you for this great article! I am looking for such solution but for classic Outlook for MS 365 family account. Currently have 3 different accounts set up: 2 @mydomain.com and 1 @gmail.
    Gmail account also, and unfortunately, happens to be my login to MS account. And so it is also used for OneDrive. I was going to change that to @outlook.com but the process is too complicated for my ability. As Gmail was the first account added when setting up Outlook, it has been designated as primary. I now have emails sent from @mydomain.com being saved in sent items of Gmail 🙄 I have now tried everything but cannot resolve this problem. Before I get myself into a real mess, I would like to know the steps to make one of @mydomain.com account primary.
    Is it possible that because it is Gmail, Outlook is penalising me?
    I am almost 70 years old and run my own little business, and have no one to rely on for this kind of problems. I am worried to do something that will cause me to lose data. Your help would be really appreciated. Kind regards Ms Kasha Gorny

      Thank you for your comment. I'd like to clarify that the term "primary account" in classic Outlook means a different thing - it's the first Exchange account you add to your Outlook. Unfortunately, in classic Outlook, there is no option to change the primary account or remove it (unless it is the only account in the profile).       An alternative solution could be to create a new Outlook profile, starting by setting up the account you want to designate as the primary one.
