How to manage columns in Excel

If you work with tables that have numerous columns, you may want to easily change their order without copying and pasting one column at a time. The Column Manager tool allows you to open a list of columns to easily navigate, auto fit, and move them by drag-and-dropping:

  1. Open the worksheet where you need to manage columns.
  2. Click on the Column Manager icon to run the tool. Click on the Column Manager icon to run the tool
  3. You will see a pane with the list of columns in the selected table. Here you will find column names (the headers or standard Excel letters), and the range they take. See the list of columns from the selected table
Note. As Excel doesn’t let you undo changed made by add-ins, we recommend creating a backup copy of your worksheet before modifying it.
  4. The easiest way to change the column order in your table is drag-n-dropping column(s) to the needed position In the Column Manager pane.
Tip. You can press the Ctrl or Shift button on your keyboard to select several columns and move them all at the same time. Another way of moving the columns is using the icons at the top of the pane. Simply select the column(s) you want to move in the list and perform the necessary action:
    • To move the column(s) to the left in your spreadsheet, click the Move Up icon in Column Manager. You will get the same result by using the Ctrl + Up arrow keyboard shortcut. Move the column(s) to the left on your spreadsheet by clicking the Move Up icon
    • If you need to move the column(s) to the right in your Excel table, click the Move Down icon. One more possibility to do the same is to press the Ctrl + Down arrow keyboard shortcut.
    • To move the necessary column(s) to the far left of your table, i.e. to put them first, select the Move to Top icon. Pressing Ctrl + Home will give the same result.
    • If you need to move the column(s) to the far right of your table, i.e. put them last, select the Move to Bottom icon. It is also possible to get the same result by pressing Ctrl + End on your keyboard.
  5. You can AutoFit a column so that it automatically fits its longest entry:
    • Select the necessary column(s) in the Column Manager pane list.
Tip. You can press the Ctrl or Shift button on your keyboard and select several columns to Auto Fit them all at the same time.
    • Click on the Auto Fit icon in the add-in pane or use the Ctrl + Right arrow keyboard shortcut. Click on this icon to auto fit the columns
  6. If you need to add a column, select an existing one in the list, click the Insert icon in the pane and the new column will appear to the right of the selected one in Excel. Click on the Insert button
  7. It's also possible to remove a column. Just click on it in the add-in pane and press the Delete icon on the toolbar.

The Column Manager tool lets you handle large tables with numerous columns on the go. Get the list of all columns from your table in the add-in pane, move columns in Excel by drag-n-dropping, auto-fit, insert, delete and navigate to them in a click.
