Frequently asked questions

What are Doc Tools and what do I need them for?

Doc Tools consists of 4 different add-ons that relieve you from all the minor text adjustments in your documents.

Want to unify the appearance of your document? Create and save your own style & use it later for other documents? Or even share the styles with your teammates? The Styles add-on will help you out.

Want to send personalized emails to a list of recipients directly from Google Docs? Maybe also add attachments or links to the shared Google files? Easy Mail Merge will manage your campaigns effortlessly.

Want to sort lists, tables, and numbers? Change the text case? Add and remove highlighting? Turn numbers to words or back to integers? The Tools add-on is here to help you.

Want to see what links, headings, bookmarks, pictures and tables are there in your doc? Or maybe search for words or phrases and see them right in context? The Search & Navigate add-on is here for you.

Can’t I do all these with Google Docs standard features?

Only few of these features are available in Google Docs.

As for Tools: you can switch letters from lower to upper and the other way or capitalize each word. But you can’t toggle text and capitalize only the first word in a sentence while our add-on can. You can also work with highlighters and font size, but our utility changes these in a single click.

As for Styles: the standard options only create a title and headings of different levels. Our add-on is much more than that. It lets you style these elements in many ways, add your own custom elements (quotes, lists, etc.), and save all these as style sets. Styles sets that you can share with other people to unify your documents.

As for Search & Navigate, it takes the standard features to a new level. For instance, you can collapse headings of the higher level, see the lists of all bookmarks, pictures, tables, and links of the document. You can jump around them in no particular order and manage right from the add-on pane.

How to use Tools in Google Docs?

  1. Run the tool from Extensions > Doc Tools > Start.
  2. Switch to Tools if it's not open already.
  3. Select the text you’d like to modify.
  4. Click one of the 11 icons to perform the action.

See a more detailed description here.

How does sorting work with your add-on?

Tools allow you to arrange your table rows, list items, or even headings with all their text in alphabetical order. Simply select them and pick one of the sorting options: ascending (A to Z) or descending (Z to A). You can even sort rows in a table by several non-adjacent columns!

How does the add-on convert numbers?

When working with numbers, you can get them both ways: spell numbers or replace words with integers. For example, your "427" will turn to "four hundred twenty-seven", while "seventy-seven thousand" to "77000".

Can I change case with your add-on?

Changing case in the selection is as easy as clicking the necessary icon: capitalize each sentence or word, apply uppercase or lowercase, and even toggle case.

What’s so special about your highlighters?

The add-on offers 5 "muted" highlighters to single out the important parts of the text. You can utilize each of them with the possibility to remove all or just one particular color from the selection.

How to use Styles in Google Docs?

  1. Run the tool from Extensions > Doc Tools > Start.
  2. Switch to Styles if it's not open already.
  3. Pick the style you'd like to apply (or create your own set).
  4. Click the Style button.

See a more detailed description here.

Can I preview the changes before applying the style?

Sure! Aside from a small square at the top illustrating the style, you will see how each element from the selected style looks like right on the add-on pane. Besides, if you open the editing features, you will preview how all elements play together right in a document.

Can I style only certain paragraphs rather than the entire document?

Yes. Just click the element within the style (rather than the Style button), and its formatting will be applied to the selected paragraph.

Can I mail merge from Google Docs?
