Find and select similar cells in Excel

Find Similar Cells is designed to find and select similar cells in Excel quickly and easily. Read the step-by-step instruction on how to use it.

  1. Select a cell in your worksheet that contains the value you are looking for:

Select a cell to search for similar entries.

  2. On the Ablebits Tools tab, in the Search group, click Find and Replace > Max Differences:

How to start Find Similar Cells.

  3. Pick the number of characters that may be different between the value in the initially selected cell and the entries you want to find:

Select the number of different characters between the initially selected cell and the found ones.

Note. The add-in is case-sensitive, i.e. it treats different cases of the same letter as different characters.
  4. Click the Find and Replace arrow and pick the area where the add-in will search for similar cells. You can choose to search in the current column, the current table, or the active sheet:

Find similar cells in the current column, the current table, or the active sheet.

Tip. If you need to find identical matches, use the Select by Value add-in.
  5. The add-in will automatically select all similar cells:

Find and select similar cells in Excel.

Note. The tool scans and selects cells in the entire column/table/sheet, including headers.
Note. Find Similar Cells works with values in the formula bar, not with the ones you can see in your cells. Depending on your cells' format, the values stored in the formula bar may differ from the ones you see, as in the screenshot below:

Sometimes the values shown in the formula bar are different from the ones you see in cells.

I would like to type a tyre size into 3 columns - this then returns a search of a worksheet and gives me a particular answer that is already in the sheet..

rather than continually go through the filtering process. there must be a quicker way

example
Cell 1 - 285
Cell 2 - 70
Cell 3 - 17

returns a value of what rim width it will fit
returns a value of Width - length - Height - Weight so i can quickly process freight quotes..

thank you

Hello Craig,

Thank you for contacting us. For us to be able to help you better, please send us a small sample workbook with 2 sheets to support@ablebits.com: 1 - your source data and 2 - the result you expect to get. I kindly ask you to shorten the tables to 10-20 rows.
Note! The result sheet is of great importance and often gives us a better understanding of your task rather than any text description. Please don't forget to include it.
We'll look into your task and see if our software can help.

i have a 20K row doc, and one of the columns is "address", that has a number of fuzzy dupes. running the 'find replace" "find similar cells in the current column" with max characters of "4" doesn't find any "similar cells" ... i can see them in the first 50 rows, so i must be missing something...

am i using the add-in correctly??
