Emily C Kern is a math instructional specialist at a middle school in Austin, TX. Having worked for 8 years in Title I schools (5 as a teacher and 3 as a specialist), she has come to understand the state and federal accountability systems and the importance of using data to improve students learning. Emily works directly with math teachers to analyze data from assessments (both local and state) to pinpoint which students need support and which need extension. She works with administrators, using the data, to see what areas of the curriculum need resources and professional development. From planning interventions to disaggregating sub-group performance data to increasing efficiency for rote tasks, Emily uses technology to support data-driven decisions about curriculum and student support.
Emily has provided professional development in data use and analysis to staff at her school, to math teachers from across the Austin Independent School District, and to instructional coaches and specialists from Region XIII in Texas. When not playing with data in Excel, Emily jams and blocks for the Texas Rollergirls in Austin.
