Random Generator for Excel - short description
Random Generator is an add-in for Microsoft Excel that can fill a selected range with random numbers (unique or non-unique), integers, real numbers, dates or strings in just one click. It can randomly sort values in rows, columns or a range, fill selected cells with random values from Microsoft Excel custom lists, or from your custom lists. The add-in works for Microsoft Excel 2007, 2003, 2002 (XP) and 2000.

How to fill the range with random numbers: integers, real numbers, booleans and dates
- In your Microsoft Excel worksheet, select the cells that you want to fill with random values, and open the Random Generator dialog box by clicking on its icon
, or go to Excel Menu -> Ablebits.com -> Random Generator for Excel.
Or, you can open the Random Generator and select the range you want to fill with random values by using the standard Excel button to select the range

- In the Random Generator window, go to the "Simple values" tab.
- In the appropriate boxes, set the minimum and maximum values, and click on the corresponding button (Integer / Real / String / Boolean).
- If you need unique random values, check the "Generate unique values" checkbox.
- Click the "Close" button to close the Random Generator window.
Tip: If you most often need to fill just one range, check the checkbox labeled "Close Random Generator after filling the range". If you need to fill in 2 or more different ranges, don't close the Random Generator window after filling the first range, and use the standard Excel button to select another range.
How to work with Excel custom lists or your own custom list
How to populate the range with random values from a custom list
- In your Microsoft Excel worksheet, select the cells that you want to fill with random values, and open the Random Generator dialog box by clicking on its icon

- In the Random Generator window, go to the "Custom list" tab.
- Select the custom list needed, or click on the plus sign to expand and select only some values from the list by pressing the Ctrl key and selecting with the mouse. You can select one complete list and some items from another list.
- Click the "Generate" button.
- If you need unique random values, check the "Unique values" checkbox.
- Click the "Close" button to close the Random Generator window.
How to add your own custom list
- Open the Random Generator dialog box by clicking on its icon
, or go to Excel Menu -> Ablebits.com -> Random Generator for Excel.
- In the Random Generator window, go to the "Custom list" tab.
- Select the cells from values of which you want to make up your custom list by using the standard Excel button in the "Create new custom list" area.
- Click the "Add" button. Your custom list is added to the Random Generator custom lists as well as to the standard Excel custom lists accessible in Microsoft Excel menu - > Tools -> Options -> Custom lists.
- Click the "Close" button to close the Random Generator window.
How to pick up a given number of random values from a custom list
- In your Microsoft Excel worksheet, select the cells that you want to fill with random values. For example, if you have 100 names in your custom list and you want to pick up random 10, then you select 10 blank cells in Excel.
- Open the Random Generator dialog box by clicking on its icon

- In the Random Generator window, go to the "Custom list" tab.
- Select the custom list needed.
- Click the "Generate" button.
- If you need unique random values, check the "Unique values" checkbox.

How to fill the range with random strings
This option is ideal for generating random passwords using any character sets.
How to generate strings of a given length
- In your Microsoft Excel worksheet, select the cells that you want to fill with random strings, and open the Random Generator dialog box by clicking on its icon

- In the Random Generator window, go to the "Strings" tab.
- Select the needed character set(s). If you need to generate strings using only a limited number of certain characters, check the "Custom" checkbox and type or copy / paste the needed characters. You can use this option alone or in combination with other character sets.
- Set the string length. You can set the string length from 1 to 99 characters.
- Click the "Generate" button.
- Click the "Close" button to close the Random Generator window.
How to generate strings of a given pattern (by mask)
Steps 1 - 3 are the same as above.
4. Set the mask. You use the mask when you need the string of a particular pattern. In the mask, a question mark (?) stands for one character. E.g. if you need the string like this F0E3-AD27-53A0, you use this mask ????-????-????. In the mask, you can use any symbols. Here is an example: you want the first 3 characters in the strings always to be 000, then you set this mask: 000-????-????.
Steps 5 and 6 are the same as above.
How to randomly sort cells in rows, columns and a range
- In your Microsoft Excel worksheet, select the cells that you want to randomly sort, and open the Random Generator dialog box by clicking on its icon

- In the Random Generator window, go to the "Sort" tab.
- Select the needed sorting option:
- "Cells in each row separately"
- "Cells in each row separately"
- "Entire rows"
- "Entire columns"
- "All cells in a range".
- Click the "Sort" button.
- Click the "Close" button to close the Random Generator window.
How to select rows randomly
- In your Microsoft Excel worksheet, choose the range from which you want to randomly select rows, and open the Random Generator dialog box by clicking on its icon
